More Time to Grow: How Scott Property Group Got Out of the Books

For many business owners, the books get done the same way: by the owner, late, on top of everything else. That works for a while, until the business grows enough that it doesn’t.

Brandon and Sarah Scott of Scott Property Group reached that point.

A business built on relationships

“We’re very much about relationships,” they say. “It’s actually kind of our slogan: where real estate is about relationships.”

That’s something we have in common. Good advice starts with knowing the people you’re working with.

Ready for a partner, not just a preparer

Before working with us, the Scotts handled most of the financial side themselves.

“Sarah was kind of doing the bookkeeping before, and then we had a CPA in place, and we knew it was time for a change,” Brandon says. “We were looking for a partner to help us strategize.”

For Sarah, the timing made it harder. “I was doing the P&Ls and keeping the books at the beginning of the month, and there’s a lot of other things that happen at the beginning of the month.”

They found us through someone they already trusted. “We got their information from our financial advisor, so it was a good recommendation.”

Detailed reports, every month

Now, instead of building the reports herself, Sarah receives them.

“The thing that I like the most about working with Dillon is we get monthly profit and loss reports, and they’re very detailed.”

A profit and loss report shows what the business brought in and what it spent. Getting one every month means you always know where you stand, so there are no surprises at the end of the year.

Onboarding with a whole team

Switching to a new team can feel like a lot of work. The Scotts say it wasn’t.

“The onboarding was great. I had a whole team taking care of me and making sure we had all our info set up and entered.”

Now, they know exactly who to call. “I have two or three people over there, and I know who to ask questions.”

A one-stop shop

Instead of juggling separate providers, the Scotts have everything in one place.

“It’s a one-stop shop. They’re handling the bookkeeping, the payroll, and our taxes.”

They also say the people make a difference. “They’re wonderful people, and it certainly helps working with them when you can tell that they like what they’re doing and that they’re good at what they’re doing. So it helps us be better too.”

Time to grow in a new direction

Free time is useful for more than rest. For the Scotts, it’s a chance to build something new.

“Now that we have a little more free time, we’re trying to develop more of our business to help investors too. That’s a new direction that we’re bringing in to Scott Property Group, so that is helping us have more time to focus on that and learn and grow in that area.”

And business is strong. “Last year was our best year yet.”

“It makes me feel a lot more comfortable having a professional keeping track of all those numbers, making sure that we don’t drop the ball anywhere or miss something.”
